Our senses are connected to memory, as a single sound or smell is linked through the brain to previous events in our lives. The science behind this is quite simple; the part of the brain that receives and reacts to the senses is the same part that houses emotional memories. This part of the brain processes the feelings and creates a connection, pairing the response with the stimulus (the sound). When a sound is heard it triggers the feeling that was previously felt. A smell or a sight will trigger feelings and memories whether they be good or bad.
Photography has been used as a memory aid and has been for centuries. When paired with a sound or an installation to touch, it increases the personal connection of the viewer. This means each viewer has a different reaction to a piece of work.
